Major AI Learning Advancement: New Research

Researchers just made a really exciting AI discovery.

AI systems can learn to use new tools just by reading documentation without needing any examples and even invent NEW techniques based on data alone.

This is a big deal.

It's kind of like handing someone with zero construction experience brand new power tools and manuals - and they can start completing projects without ever needing to be physically shown how each tool is used, and even come up with ways to use the tools you never even thought of (or maybe the manufacturer never even thought of!)

In tests across language, math, images, and video tasks, large language models matched or exceeded their performance when given a few examples simply by taking in docs describing what each tool does.

Here's the thing I'm learning - carefully curating the right examples to teach AI is challenging and time-consuming.

But with documentation alone, the AI figured out how to combine tools it had never seen before to accomplish new tasks, like editing images and tracking objects in video. The AI even replicated recently invented techniques just by reading docs on the new tools involved.

The ability to rapidly learn unfamiliar tools simply from documentation suggests exciting potential - AI that can make discoveries as new tools and capabilities come online without needing to be explicitly taught each time.

Just another new AI advancement! Thanks to Ethan Mollick for sharing this article; it was such an interesting read!
